MULUNGUSHI

The name Mulungushi has special significance in the history of our great nation. The Mulungushi River, which runs north of Kabwe in central Zambia, has a rocky area today known as Mulungushi Rock of Authority. This isolated rock served as the genesis for our independence struggle due to the momentous open air meetings where the plans, dreams, and ideals of our nation was debated and resolved. These same ideals of self-determination, unity, and cooperation are core to Mulungushi International Conference Centre and serve as a reminder of our original mission and purpose, to provide a platform for national and international dialogue, diplomacy, and progress.

OUR STORY

1970 - Construction Begins

When Zambia commissioned Yugoslav engineers to plan, design, and construct a conference centre in only four months, it seemed like an impossible mission. However, it took only 107 days to complete Mulungushi Conference Centre with its Great Hall, in readiness for the third Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Nations in September 1970.

1970 - Conference Hall Opens

Zambia's First President Kenneth Kaunda officially opened Mulungushi Conference Hall declaring it a milestone in the country's growth as a sovereign independent nation. Hosting the Non-Aligned Movement Conference was a resounding success, positioning Zambia as a beacon for pan-African progress and unity.

1970 - James Brown Performance

The famous ambassador of soul music, James Brown, made an iconic visit to Zambia and came to perform at the Mulungushi Conference Hall. MICC has since hosted countless artists, contributing to the growth of both the Zambian and African entertainment industry.

1976 - Henry Kissinger Lusaka Trip

Mulungushi International Conference Centre hosted multiple international diplomatic conferences. These conferences were spearheaded by President Kenneth Kaunda as he sought to resolve conflicts in Angola, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Inviting Henry Kissinger allowed him to directly appeal to US leaders and facilitate marked change in US foreign policy in Africa.

1984 - Namibia Peace Talks

Mulungushi International Conference Centre hosted the Multi-Party Namibian Independence Talks where First President Kenneth Kaunda tirelessly worked to get the opposing parties to find common ground and move towards peace and self-determination for all Nambians.

2001 - East Wing

In preparation for the The Lusaka Summit of the OAU in July 2001, a new wing was added to MICC improving the available facilities and adding modern confrence rooms and an additional main hall. The Summit formulated a mandate to translate the transformation of the Organization of African Unity into the African Union.

2020 - New Wing

The construction of the New Wing is in full swing with MICC excited about the additional services it will bring to the table to the benefit of our guests.

2022 - Kenneth Kaunda International Conference Centre

The construction of the Kenneth Kaunda Wing is complete with unmatched conference facilities it will usher MICC into a new era providing dignitaries with world class service.
